Smellin’ Good

Mountaineer Brand - Natural Deodorant (3 Pack) Best Selling Scents

Deodorant. Something that most everyone uses and doesn’t think twice about with respect to ingredients. If it smells good, prevents odor for the duration of a day, and prevents perspiration, why does it matter what’s inside? We’re not ingesting it, so what gives? Upon closer inspection, some of the magic ingredients that do the job have been criticized for health concerns. Aluminum Chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium, parabens, phthalates to name a few have seen their fair share of critique.

A host of studies show that phthalates have a negative impact on our health. According to Nephrotoxicity of Phthalates: A Review Based on Epidemiological and Toxicological Evidence, phthalates can adversely affect the kidneys and even lead to kidney diseases. I will not claim to be an expert on all the ingredients in deodorant and their adverse impacts, but know that if I have a choice, I’ll gladly seek out alternatives.

In review of my current daily deodorant, I noticed some of the bad guys - Propylene glycol, talc, aluminum zirconium, and artificial fragrances. This was enough to make me see what else was out there. You may have seen increased messaging on body care products, namely deodorant claiming no aluminum and no parabens. While a good start, natural deodorant brands offer a cleaner alternative.

Enter Mountaineer Brand, a West Virginia based company selling all natural men’s grooming products with ingredients sourced from the earth since 2013. From deodorant to beard oils, beard balms, shave oils, and body wash, their selection is diverse.

I’m roughly half a stick into the White Wash scent of their natural deodorant and am impressed. No aluminum, no parabens, chemical-free, and lasts the day. Pretty simple. If you’re looking for an alternative, check out their offerings here.

Similar to my wardrobe journey, I’m on a related path to replace my grooming products with those not only Made in the USA, but also free from toxic ingredients. Stay tuned for my review of body wash. Unfortunately, I don’t have a beard to test our their beard oils and balms, but drop a comment below if you’ve had some experience.
