Ring Ring

Are you an avid or casual bike rider who gets out on the trails or locations where you constantly have to pass others? Do you generally announce yourself when passing by way of an audible “on your left”? After a few times, if you’re like me, it can get tiresome. Then there’s the timing - how close to the individual do you make the announcement? Will they hear you or panic and not understand what you’re trying to convey? It’s a necessary task to ensure a safe ride and interaction for all.

I much prefer cycling on open roads, devoid of any traffic, be it human-powered or motor-powered. That said, I still find myself traversing neighborhood paths or rails to trails that are packed with other recreational enthusiasts or those just out for a casual stroll. In those instances, I’ve found a good old-fashioned bell to be much more universally accepted and effective than signaling by way of my voice.

In my quest to ensure a safe ride and the safety of others, I naturally wondered if I could find a bell made in the USA. Sure enough, one existed with the Spurcycle Original Bell entering the chat. Most bike bells lack the volume or build quality to handle years of real-world riding. Spurcycle fixes that with precision-engineered bells crafted for a lifetime of use. They emit a powerful, clear tone that effectively alerts pedestrians and traffic without sounding harsh. Spurcycle bells ring three times longer than others. Ringing from farther away helps clear a friendly path ahead. The Original bells are built in Bend, Oregon.

After identifying the bell and learning more about what it had to offer, I knew I had to purchase it. I chose the Black-Gold option to more closely match my bike’s aesthetic. Installation was an absolute breeze with just two sizing band options to accommodate your bike’s handlebar and a few quick turns of a 2.5 mm hex tool. While I decided to install it facing up, I’ve seen installs with the dome facing forward. I don’t believe it impacts any performance - it’s simply preference.

Testing the bell on rides proved its value with clear acknowledgement from pedestrians on the path ahead. The bell’s long-lasting ring allows for earlier signaling and less repeated ringing often required with cheaper, foreign-built bells. I can confidently say this bell is a worthwhile investment and comes highly recommended.
