ULA Equipment: Ultralight Utility, Built in Utah
Founded in 2001 by long-distance backpacker Brian Frankle, ULA Equipment (UltraLight Adventure Equipment) is a legendary American brand specializing in ultralight, trail-proven backpacks and backcountry accessories. Operating out of a dedicated workshop in Logan, Utah, the company designs, cuts, sews, and finishes every pack in-house, maintaining a strict commitment to 100% domestic manufacturing.
Born out of necessity on the Pacific Crest Trail, ULA was established to bridge the gap between heavy, traditional expedition internal-frame packs and fragile minimalist rucksacks. Over more than two decades—and under the stewardship of long-distance hiker Peter Longobardi since 2020—ULA packs like the Circuit and Catalyst have earned a cult following among thru-hikers, consistently ranking among the most used backpacks on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail.
Core Pillars & Manufacturing Principles
100% In-House Logan Production: Every ULA product is manufactured under one roof in Logan, Utah. By managing production in-house rather than outsourcing, the brand ensures rigorous quality control and provides living-wage skilled jobs to local craftspeople.
Thru-Hiker Fit & Ergonomics: Recognizing that fit dictates long-distance comfort, ULA offers modular torso sizing, interchangeable hip belts, and specialized S-strap or J-strap shoulder configurations designed to comfortably fit diverse body types.
Bombproof Lightness: The brand utilizes heavy-duty yet lightweight technical fabrics—including custom Robic nylon and waterproof X-Pac laminates—paired with internal carbon fiber and Delrin hoop frames that deliver impressive load transfer without excess weight.
Field Repairability & Modular Utility: ULA designs packs without non-functional gimmicks, emphasizing clean roll-top closures, oversized exterior mesh pockets, and simple hardware that can be easily repaired on trail.
By prioritizing functional durability, real-world trail feedback, and local Utah craftsmanship, ULA Equipment remains an industry benchmark for American-made ultralight gear designed to tackle thousands of continuous miles.
