STS Bicycles: Precision Custom Bicycle Fabrication, Built in Westland, MI
Founded by framebuilder and fabricator Steve T. Szabo, STS Bicycles (STS Custom Cycles) is an independent framebuilding workshop operating out of Westland, Michigan (in Metro Detroit). Operating at the intersection of American cycling heritage, custom metal fabrication, and Midwestern craftsmanship, the shop specializes in handcrafted steel bicycle frames, custom forks, and bespoke cycling components built for road, gravel, track, and touring disciplines.
Drawing on Southeast Michigan's deep history of precision machining and metalworking, STS Bicycles crafts frames one at a time to exact rider-specific geometries. By using high-grade American and European steel tubing alloys, every frame is engineered to offer superior ride quality, vibration damping, and long-term structural integrity that mass-produced carbon and aluminum frames cannot match.
Core Pillars & Manufacturing Principles
100% Hand-Fabricated in Westland, MI: Every frame is mitered, jigged, TIG-welded or lug-brazed, and hand-finished individually in Steve Szabo’s Westland workshop.
Premium Alloy Tubing Sourcing: STS Bicycles utilizes high-strength, double-butted chromoly and stainless steel tubing sets sourced from domestic and renowned international mills (such as Fairing/True Temper and Columbus), optimizing wall thickness for maximum power transfer and ride comfort.
Bespoke Rider-Tailored Geometry: Rather than relying on off-the-shelf sizing charts, each frame is built around the rider's specific physical dimensions, riding style, weight distribution, and intended terrain.
Hand-Brazed Craftsmanship & Custom Details: The workshop is recognized for intricate lugwork, custom dropouts, internal cable routing, integrated rack/fender mounts, and durable, custom powder-coat or wet-paint finishes applied to protect the steel over decades of hard riding.
By combining precision tube mitering with custom-tailored geometries and Michigan metalworking roots, STS Bicycles delivers heirloom-quality steel frames designed to last a lifetime on the road or trail.
