Mountain Meadow Wool

Buffalo, Wyoming 🇺🇸

Operating at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains along the western plains of Wyoming, Mountain Meadow Wool is a family-owned fiber mill dedicated to revitalizing the American wool industry. Founded in 2007 by Karen Hostetler, the company has grown into the largest full-service spinning mill in the West. Operating with a strict "farm to fashion" philosophy, raw fleece enters one side of their state-of-the-art Buffalo facility and emerges from the other as premium, ranch-traceable yarn, apparel, and textiles.

Mountain Meadow Wool is deeply committed to supporting the heritage of Western ranching culture, purchasing premium wool from local ranchers via handshakes rather than corporate contracts. Every batch of their signature Mountain Merino® wool—sourced from regional Rambouillet, Targhee, and Cormo sheep—is completely traceable back to its ranch of origin. By combining vintage textile traditions with modern eco-friendly innovations, they produce high-fidelity fibers that offer next-to-skin softness while preserving the natural durability and breathability of the wool.

Mill Highlights and Sustainable Practices:

  • 100% Born and Made in the USA: From the sheep grazing on Wyoming pastures to the final washing, carding, spinning, and hand-dyeing, the entire supply chain remains strictly domestic.

  • Eco-Conscious Operations: The mill utilizes biodegradable cleaners and vegetable-based spinning oils that preserve the wool’s natural lanolin, while employing a closed-loop system that recycles 50% of the water used in the scouring process.

  • Premium Mountain Merino®: Specializes in processing ultra-fine fibers (typically below 22 microns) to completely eliminate the traditional "prickle factor" often associated with heavy wool.

  • Bespoke Custom Processing: In addition to their own retail lines of knitting yarns and home goods, the mill provides custom blending, spinning, and small-batch dye services for independent ranches, fiber artists, and universities across the country.
